The beautiful SISI wall basket was woven in the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains in Uganda by an all-female weaving group. Some of the women in this collective were widowed in the Allied Democratic Forces war of the 90’s, whilst others were left homeless. In 2003 a group of six women decided to explore creative ways to better sustain themselves and their children, and found that the traditional handicraft of basket weaving was the best way of earning a living.

This pretty basket is woven from raffia and banana leaf stem, featuring a geometric radial pattern in gold and white. Although these woven wall platters look wonderful hung alone and beautiful in a group, they can also be used for fruit and bread - or for displaying jewellery, soaps or hand towels.  Traditionally, these baskets were (and are still) used for serving a local meal called Akaro (mingled millet flour) and used in wedding ceremonies in parts of Uganda.

For many of these weavers, this work is the difference between putting food on the table and relying on emergency relief. For this craft group to gain wider access to market means sustainable livelihoods and the growth of the Rwenzori economy.
