How to Design a More Adult Looking Space

DESIGN A SOPHISTICATED SPACE FULL OF CHARACTER

By Sarah Lyon

Whether you’re newly out of college or have been living on your own for quite some time, you may be wondering how exactly you can style your space so it looks like a “real adult” lives there. You’re certainly not alone. “Making a space more grown-up is a goal for many of our clients,” says Pamela O’Brien of Pamela Hope Designs. “Even some clients in their 40s will say things like, ‘Finally I have a grown-up house’ or ‘We’ve had this furniture since college, we are full-fledged adults and our house should reflect that!’”

Luckily, taking your home from so-so to chic is simple! Designers weigh in below with their favorite hacks for creating a space that looks both mature and welcoming.

Position Your Furniture Like a Pro

Daniella Hoffer of Daniella Hoffer Interiors says that a room will instantly look more elevated with a strategic furniture arrangement. “Multiple sitting areas in one space set up in groupings [will create a] more intimate conversation,” she explains. Position your chairs like so and then invite the crew over for a chic cocktail happy hour at home. And when it comes to selecting your furniture, think outside the box. “We love to incorporate architectural seating, chairs that are almost like art,” Hoffer adds. Taylor Johnson of Taylor Johnson Interiors agrees, stating, “Think interesting shaped arms and legs, possibly a bench seat on a sofa, or a dramatic high back chair.”

Switch Out Your Throw Pillows

It’s time to put those heavy-duty, flannel pillow covers into storage until the weather turns crisp again. For now, opt for a light and airy design instead. “Switching out your throw pillows is an easy way to give new life to your sofa,” Sailor comments. “You can opt for different textures on your pillows to add depth and interest.”

Do a Bit of Decluttering

Spring cleaning isn’t solely about washing the windows and dusting off the porch. You may also want to tackle that pesky hall closet or your under-bed bins. “Decluttering your home of decor you no longer love is just as important as cleaning,” Sailor notes. “Donate decor or furniture that no longer makes you happy and make room for new pieces!”

Incorporate Some New Accessories

Bonus points if you opt for something with a bit of a vintage-inspired touch, notes author and thrifting expert Virginia Chamlee. “There’s been a tremendous push toward vintage furnishings in recent years, and I think at least part of the interest stems from wanting pieces that look lived-in and worn,” she comments. “This Aged Wall Mirror in bronze hits all the marks—it’s a bold statement piece with a perfectly weathered look.”

Upgrade Your Outdoor Space

Make the most of the warm spring days ahead by adding some flair to your outdoor space. Chamlee is partial to the Donut Outdoor Pouf.  “It is certainly pretty enough to use inside, but it’s actually made to be weather resistant, so you could use it to create a living room-like area on your porch or patio,” she explains.

When designing your outdoor space this spring, you’ll want to ensure that it’s cohesive looking and serves a purpose. “Create groupings of furniture that serve real functions, the same way you would inside your home,” designer Courtney Smith suggests. “Establishing a purpose for different outdoor areas helps draw you to those destinations.” When determining what hues to use, look to your interior scheme. “Connect your indoor and outdoor areas by repeating your color palette and design vibe to visually tie things together,” Smith offers.

Not sure where to begin? Smith suggests starting with an outdoor dining area. “There’s no substitute for al fresco nights around a table,” she says. “I love a round table like the Circle Outdoor Dining Table, surrounded by classic chairs like the Marais A Side Chair in a color that relates to your home’s interior. For me, this is army green, always and forever.”

If space allows, Smith suggests adding another seating arrangement for additional guests. “The Yama Sofa and Lounge Chairs would be lovely around a Quatro Outdoor Teak Coffee Table,” she says. “Layer in a drinks table or two, to make certain every seat in your arrangement has a natural spot to set a drink down. Don’t forget lighting and cozy layers, so that you can enjoy your spaces even after the sun goes down.”

Then, work in some accessories. “A few extra special touches include mood lighting (think battery-operated candles, lanterns, or string lights), blankets that are tucked away for cool evenings, and lots of plants evoking a lush feeling, whether you’re on acres of land in the country or a private balcony in the city,” comments content creator Hilary Prall.

“Establishing a purpose for different outdoor areas helps draw you to those destinations.”

Why Designers Love Decorating With Cane Furniture

WHY CANE IS STAYING IN STYLE

By Sarah Lyon

It’s safe to say that cane furniture has most certainly become a designer favorite. Interior design pros enjoy incorporating cane into their plans for homes of all styles and sizes, using it both indoors and out.

Equal parts pretty and practical, here are some thoughts from designers who all agree cane won’t be going out of style anytime soon.

It’s Timeless

Angela Hamwey of Mackenzie & Co. considers cane to be a classic material. “The neutral color and texture are versatile and lend themselves nicely to complement other design styles and furnishings as they can be mixed and matched with ease,” she says. Cane is associated with many timeless pieces that designers continue to look to for inspiration. It always reminds us of the Thonet chair which is a classic, pristine design,” says Lexi Brandfon of Lex & Hudson Interiors.

Cane furniture shines in a number of different settings. “While it’s commonly seen in coastal designs, cane furniture can be incorporated into traditional, modern, and bohemian spaces alike,” Hamwey notes. Molly McGinness of Molly McGinness Interior Design agrees. “While it lends itself easily to a casual space, it can be dressed up and is perfectly acceptable in a more upscale elegant room as well,” she says.

On a related note, cane also makes an impact both indoors and out. “Whether you’re lounging by the pool, enjoying a sea breeze on the veranda, or snuggling up in bed, the natural textures and earthy tones of cane will create a serene and inviting ambiance,” says Michelle Woolley Sauter of One Coast Design. And whether you choose to introduce large amounts of cane into your home or work in some smaller pops of the material is up to you. “Cane furniture can be used in any area of your house from bedroom headboards to outdoor hanging chairs and even intricate credenzas,” says Rasha Rizwan of Mackenzie Collier Interiors.

It’s Warm

Many designers note that cane has the power of adding warmth and texture to a space instantly. “Bringing cane furniture in through counter stools in the kitchen helps to warm up and add texture to a straight-lined and modern kitchen, especially if the materials and fixtures are muted or lack color,” Rizwan shares. Bethany Adams of Bethany Adams Interiors agrees, noting, “Cane is a perennial designer favorite since it adds a lot of texture to a space without adding visual weight.”

It’s Practical

Cane furniture isn’t just aesthetically pleasing, it’s also practical given that it’s the opposite of hefty, bulky, and difficult to move. “Cane is a woven material that makes it easy to repair and is also typically very lightweight, so it is easy to transport,” says Marnie Oursler of Marnie Custom Homes.

It’s Durable

On a related note, cane pieces are also designed to stand the test of time. “Cane is a sturdy material that can withstand the wear and tear of daily use,” says Keely Smith of JD Elite Interiors. “This makes it a great investment for anyone who wants to create a long-lasting and timeless interior design scheme,” she adds. “Cane furniture can also be easily maintained with regular cleaning and occasional oiling to keep it looking its best.”

It’s Eco-Friendly

Many designers are prioritizing eco-friendly materials in their projects, and cane is a winner in that category, too. “As we become more environmentally cautious and focus on sustainable design, opting for cane furniture is not only an eco-friendly choice, but the natural texture adds a nice organic feel to any room,” Hamwey notes. Adds Smith, “It is often made from renewable materials and can be repurposed or recycled at the end of its life.”

TRANSFORMING A SPACE FOR TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEYS

Transformative journeys require a heightened level of attention to detail.

Every step of the process must be strenuously considered to ensure it’s supporting the ultimate goal: In this case, supporting teens dealing with mental health and substance abuse struggles.

Key Healthcare x Industry West Interiors

Founded in 2015, Key Healthcare works to provide teenagers with essential mental health and dual diagnosis treatment, keeping the intersection between mental health and substance abuse top of mind.

“Addressing both of these issues at once is what leads to lasting recovery,” says Key Healthcare co-founder Ryan Blivas. He reflects on the success story of one teenager, a young woman named Sarah, who dealt with mental health challenges and substance abuse. He also reflects on how her time in Key Healthcare’s dual diagnosis treatment program prompted her to discover a renewed sense of hope and purpose. Sarah has since developed the tools to maintain her mental health and sobriety and is happily engaging in meaningful relationships and activities while working to inspire others.

Key Healthcare Brings Life to a New Location

Recently, Industry West Interiors partnered with Key Healthcare to bring to life a new Teen Residential Treatment Center in Malibu, California. The partnership combined design expertise, compassion, and innovation, aiming to reshape the way people approach teen mental health.

Because of the therapeutic nature of the program, Malibu appealed to the Key Healthcare team as an ideal location, given that it “combines the beauty of nature, access to supportive resources, and a sense of privacy,” as Blivas explains. The geographic location, as well as the thoughtfully designed interior space, will help teenagers work toward improved mental health and well-being.

Designed for Healing

Physical environment plays a key role in fostering one’s healing journey. “Creating a supportive and nurturing atmosphere can positively impact mood, motivation, and overall mental health,” Blivas notes. When drawing its design inspiration for this locale, Key Healthcare kept a number of factors and themes top of mind, the first of which is drawing upon nature and tranquility to “create a serene and peaceful environment,” Blivas shares. “The design elements incorporate the calming presence of nature, such as soothing colors, natural materials, and open spaces, to promote relaxation and a sense of well-being,” he adds.

The concepts of safety and comfort also shaped the design plan to ensure that teenagers feel secure during their stay. “We paid attention to details such as comfortable furnishings, cozy spaces, and a warm and inviting atmosphere to foster a sense of comfort and security,” Blivas comments. It was also essential to take into account privacy and confidentiality; this meant incorporating private living spaces and secluded outdoor areas to promote healing. One key element of the program is its ability to foster a sense of belonging and community, as well as a continued support network, and the design methods employed help to promote these ideals, too.

It was also important to keep the treatment environment free of triggers and distractions. “By carefully selecting the location and designing the physical space, we can create a sanctuary free from external stressors and negative influences, allowing individuals to focus on their recovery and personal growth,” Blivas adds. The completed space also promotes various therapeutic methods, including art therapy, mindfulness spaces, outdoor activities, and comfortable common areas for group therapy sessions.
