WHY CANE IS STAYING IN STYLE

By Sarah Lyon

It’s safe to say that cane furniture has most certainly become a designer favorite. Interior design pros enjoy incorporating cane into their plans for homes of all styles and sizes, using it both indoors and out.

Equal parts pretty and practical, here are some thoughts from designers who all agree cane won’t be going out of style anytime soon.

It’s Timeless

Angela Hamwey of Mackenzie & Co. considers cane to be a classic material. “The neutral color and texture are versatile and lend themselves nicely to complement other design styles and furnishings as they can be mixed and matched with ease,” she says. Cane is associated with many timeless pieces that designers continue to look to for inspiration. It always reminds us of the Thonet chair which is a classic, pristine design,” says Lexi Brandfon of Lex & Hudson Interiors.

It’s Versatile

Cane furniture shines in a number of different settings. “While it’s commonly seen in coastal designs, cane furniture can be incorporated into traditional, modern, and bohemian spaces alike,” Hamwey notes. Molly McGinness of Molly McGinness Interior Design agrees. “While it lends itself easily to a casual space, it can be dressed up and is perfectly acceptable in a more upscale elegant room as well,” she says.

On a related note, cane also makes an impact both indoors and out. “Whether you're lounging by the pool, enjoying a sea breeze on the veranda, or snuggling up in bed, the natural textures and earthy tones of cane will create a serene and inviting ambiance,” says Michelle Woolley Sauter of One Coast Design. And whether you choose to introduce large amounts of cane into your home or work in some smaller pops of the material is up to you. “Cane furniture can be used in any area of your house from bedroom headboards to outdoor hanging chairs and even intricate credenzas,” says Rasha Rizwan of Mackenzie Collier Interiors.

It’s Warm

Many designers note that cane has the power of adding warmth and texture to a space instantly. “Bringing cane furniture in through counter stools in the kitchen helps to warm up and add texture to a straight-lined and modern kitchen, especially if the materials and fixtures are muted or lack color,” Rizwan shares. Bethany Adams of Bethany Adams Interiors agrees, noting, “Cane is a perennial designer favorite since it adds a lot of texture to a space without adding visual weight.”

It’s Practical

Cane furniture isn’t just aesthetically pleasing, it’s also practical given that it’s the opposite of hefty, bulky, and difficult to move. “Cane is a woven material that makes it easy to repair and is also typically very lightweight, so it is easy to transport,” says Marnie Oursler of Marnie Custom Homes.

It’s Durable

On a related note, cane pieces are also designed to stand the test of time. “Cane is a sturdy material that can withstand the wear and tear of daily use,” says Keely Smith of JD Elite Interiors. “This makes it a great investment for anyone who wants to create a long-lasting and timeless interior design scheme,” she adds. “Cane furniture can also be easily maintained with regular cleaning and occasional oiling to keep it looking its best.”

It’s Eco-Friendly

Many designers are prioritizing eco-friendly materials in their projects, and cane is a winner in that category, too. “As we become more environmentally cautious and focus on sustainable design, opting for cane furniture is not only an eco-friendly choice, but the natural texture adds a nice organic feel to any room,” Hamwey notes. Adds Smith, “It is often made from renewable materials and can be repurposed or recycled at the end of its life.”
